Complications With Thrombolytics

Thrombolytics provide physicians with an extremely powerful tool to combat several accidents and conditions that involve the development of a blood clot. However, these drugs, for as useful as they are, additionally create unexpected problems if a doctor does not prescribe the drug properly. In certain situations, it may be safe for a patient to be using thrombolytic medication, while other circumstances may make the drugs a significantly riskier choice.

As thrombolytic medication works to bust through blood clots, it may also increase the possibility of blood-related complications if internal bleeding is present. In stroke sufferers, improper use of thrombolytics may make their hemorrhagic strokes more intense. In addition, any internal bleeding in the body at the time of use may appear more damaging due to the presence of thrombolytic drugs.

In addition to stroke complications, doctors rarely are supposed to prescribe thrombolytics if the patient has undergone surgery within a recent time period. This usually measures roughly two weeks from the implementation of thrombolytic drugs, but may vary depending on the patient.

Allergic reactions to the drug are serious considerations for future use of thrombolytics. In particular, streptokinase, a specific type of medication, is not meant to be prescribed twice. The resulting build up of antibodies from the initial use immensely increases the possibility of a severe reaction. The subsequent appearance of anaphylaxis, a kind of allergic reaction, may cause great damage to the internal organs, complicating any further treatment.

Present conditions and problems may further damage the body if thrombolytics are employed as a treatment option. For example, patients with peptic ulcers may be strongly affected in an adverse manner. Additionally, pregnant women should avoid thrombolytic pharmaceutical treatments.

As with many other treatments, thrombolytic drugs are only useful when the conditions are safe for use. Otherwise, in the hands of a careless physician, these medications can prove extremely dangerous. For more information, contact a medical malpractice attorney.
